We aren’t just blueprints anymore! Our services cover a large range, but one thing has remained true for more than 60 years: a strong pledge to high quality.
Honesty, dependability, and pride in our services coupled with our dedicated clientele and personnel has become the layout for success for our business. Blueprint Service Company started in May of 1955 thanks to Tom Kuwahara and his business partner, Jack Steele. Tom was a draftsman for the City of Bakersfield and, while there were two or three other blueprint companies in town, he felt that there was a void in the services rendered. To that end, in 1956, Tom bought Steele out and he and his wife, Gladys, became the first of the Kuwaharas to operate the business.
Our shop was first located where the Civic Auditorium now stands. We soon moved locations to a warehouse on 17th Street, where we operated for 40 years. It was in 1999 that we needed more space and moved to our current location at 1100 18th Street, in the old Bakersfield Bowling Academy/ Bakersfield Floral Supply building.
In 1989, Tom retired, leaving the business in the hands of his sons, Terry and Keith. Keith’s wife, Kim, also joined the staff, as well as Terry’s son Kyle. Through the years, uncles, siblings, and children of the Kuwaharas have all worked as part of Blueprint Service, making this a complete family affair.
Still, each and every employee, related or not, is a huge point of pride for the company. We have employed 100’s of people during our years in business, including many long time employees, who are the heart and soul of the company.
In addition to our dedicated staff, we take pride in our service to our customers. We have always valued their patronage and loyalty and have tried to service them to the best of our abilities. After all “Service is Our Middle Name”.
Also of importance is our commitment to our community, as we have sponsored baseball teams and have donated to charities that benefit everything from victims of breast cancer and leukemia to basset hound rescues.
However, locations and hands aren’t the only things that have changed during the course of our years in business. Some have been highly welcomed, like the change from ammonia develop blueline copies to the large format printers. The use of the internet has provided a larger service area in California and as far away as New York. Other changes, such as shifts in technology, have been on going, including forays into digital copy, scanning, and plan rooms. Regardless, Blueprint Service Company has taken strides to always be up on the latest changes, ensuring a quality and timely job, utilizing state- of -the-art technology for every client that walks through the doors.
